It is all written! That is what I heard growing up and believed. Your Rizq (sustenance, provision) in this world has already been decided for you. Even before you were Born, it was all laid down for you. The few years that you would walk on this earth, all the food that you would have and all the wealth that you would possess, all are predestined and have been already written down for you.
So, having consumed this thought so early in life, I never took a deeper plunge into it. It has only been a few years since I have come to realize that this word`’Rizq’ is much more than just food and wealth. Gradually over the years this word manifested itself on me. And not so long ago, I had this epiphany of how beautifully it has encompassed my life. Alhamdulillah ala kulli haal 🙂 Praise is to Allah for everything.
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) has narrated, “Verily the creation of each one of you is brought together in his mother’s womb for forty days in the form of a nutfah (a drop), then he becomes an alaqah (clot of blood) for a like period, then a mudghah (morsel of flesh) for a like period, then there is sent to him the angel who blows his soul into him and who is commanded with four matters: to write down his rizq (sustenance), his life span, his actions, and whether he will be happy or unhappy. By the One, other than Whom there is no deity, verily one of you performs the actions of the people of Paradise until there is but an arms length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him, and so he acts with the actions of the people of the Hellfire and thus enters it; and verily one of you performs the actions of the people of the Hellfire, until there is but an arms length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him and so he acts with the actions of the people of Paradise and thus he enters it.”
Allah swt has decreed for you everything in this world. As is clear from the hadeeth; your life span, your actions, your share of happiness, your share of grief, and your Rizq. This covers everything that you can possibly think of. Just everything. Some as means and others as consequence.
What I want to share today with you, are the other forms of Rizq that Allah swt has written down for us. Other than food and wealth, the rizq that is a part of our life and we never look at it in this sense. Let us start by understanding the definition of Rizq.
Literally the meaning of Rizq is provision or sustenenace. It includes all the blessings that Allah swt has bestowed on us, in this world and the next, that nourish us and that which we spend on others (charity).
Now when we say blessings, it is not just the materialistic blessings of wealth and food as is the popular notion to Rizq. It includes the spiritual, the social, the psycological and the intellectual blessings as well. They are all a part of your Rizq. The Rizq that Allah swt has decided for you in this world and is at your disposal.
Rizq is everything that helps you sustain a healthy and successful life; that benefits you and your well being; be it physical, spiritual or emotional benefits, be it in this world or in the Hereafter. It is upto you how you cherish these blessings and put them to your use for benefit.
Everything that passes by you in this life is your Rizq. I mean Everything. Starting from people, to thoughts, through intellect to materialistic things. Everything that comes across you or that you come across to, is your Rizq. It is there for a reason, a purpose. Allah did not put it there just by chance but with a reason for you to seek out. It is not a coincidence that certain people, thoughts or things go sweeping in and out of your life, it is a plan. A plan so beautifully and subtly designed by Allah swt that more often than not, it escapes us. Altogether. We fail even to notice it, let alone seek or understand it.
Your Spiritual Rizq
Peace and contentment are the most beautiful type of Rizq from Allah swt. You should cherish and value it the most. If you have an unyielding Tawwakul on Allah, you are firm on your path to eternal success, you have a strong unwavering Imaan and the strength to stand against the storm, then know that this is the spiritual rizq Allah swt has provided for you. There are people who are struggling with their prayers, some with the number while others with the khushoo. And if you happen to have tasted both, the sweethness of khushoo in Salaah and the remorse of its absence, then you know what I mean. How blessed one should feel if they can taste the sweetness of their salaah and always be grateful to Allah who guides you to it, makes it easy for you. Spiritual blessings of Imaan, tawakkul (trust in Allah), sabr(pateince), khushoo, gratefulness, peace, contentment are all Rizq that Allah swt has provided for you.
The People in your life are your Rizq!
From your parents and siblings, to your friends and all the other people who enter your life at some point or the other, are your Rizq. They are in your life for a reason. Some might be there to help you, some to teach you, some to love you, some to take care of you while others are there to break you, to hurt you, to teach you the other side of life. Look around and think of your parents, your friends or some random person who was or is in your life! Now think how they might be affecting you, your thoughts, your happiness, your success, your peace. Or how they might have influenced you at one time or the other. You may or may not see it, but all the people that have been, or are, and will be a part of your life, all have a role to play in your life. However distant or unrelated they might seem to you, their being in your life has a reason. They serve a purpose. They are your Rizq. Some become the means of your happiness, while others become the reason of your wounds, but put together, they help in making you, you. They are there to sustain you in one way or the other.
The Intellect you have is your Rizq
Allah swt has blessed all of us with a mind and a heart. How you put them to use, is upto you. How intelligent, sensible, empathetic, emotional you are, all these faculties are a part of your rizq. Not everone has the same level of the intellectual faculties. Some are born geniuses, some have to struggle through their careers and studies. Be thankful to Allah swt and be content with what you have. You might be the top of your class without much effort, while your best friend is more hard working (you know it) and still is second to you. Be grateful for what Allaah swt has provided you with. Don’t be arrogant by thinking even for a second, that it is your own doing. No it is not. It is the mercy of Allah swt on you. It is His blessing. If He swt takes it away, there is nothing you can do about it! Nothing! Intelligence, having an expertise in somethings, having good sense, good mental and emotional strength, and so on, all are your Rizq from Allah swt.
The most underestimated or the most ignored rizq, if I may say, are our five basic senses. We should always make it a note, to thank Allah swt for them, atleast once every day. It scares me even to think, that I might wake up tomorrow and not be able to see the beautiful world around me, for any reason. Not that I am a pessimist, but sometimes such reminders help you understand what you are blessed with. Blessings that should not be taken for granted, just because you are born with them, doesn’t mean they will always stay. A simple example are the eyes. The eyes will grow weak while you age, it is normal. That is true about every other thing we have here. You are healthy, you can travel, see beautiful things, eat delicious food, do stuff you like, these are all your rizq. The ability to experience anything and everything in your life, is your Rizq.
Materialistic Blessings are your Rizq too!
A beautiful house, a grand car, the latest phone, all these things are also a part of your rizq. The books that you read, the articles you come across on the net, the videos you watch, everything that you see, know, learn, read and use are your Rizq. Everything that makes its way to you, which might seem ordinary like a reminder or Quote ‘whatsapped’ to you is actually sent to you by Allah swt as your rizq. How you take them, use them, how you benefit from them, or how you doom your life with their misuse, it is all upto you. These things that we have, are from Allah swt, they are our Rizq!
These are the rizq that Allah swt has blessed you with, and has written it down for you. All these things become a means for you to achive success in this life and the next or they can become a means of your doom as well, in this life as well as the Hereafter. How we use our Rizq will decide that. We will be held accountable for everything we have had and everything we will have in this life. Allah swt will ask us, how we used all these blessing, our intelellect, our health, our physical and mental strength. Not just these, but how we used our laptops, our phones, the Internet to our benefit. You think we will not be asked! Think again. All these technologies, these gadgets, the clothes we have, the houses, cars, all these luxuries are our Rizq from Allah swt. We will certainly be held to account for them. Whether or not we will be able to account for them, is something for each of us to think about.
May Allah grant us an understanding of the Rizq that He swt has blessed us with. May He swt make it easy on us to use them for our benefit. May He swt make us of those who are always thankful and not arrogant for all these Blessings. Ameen.
Until next time then, in sha Allah 🙂
